I have black hair that turns medium-dark brown in the Summer.(now.) What color highlights would be best?

The best hi-lites would be the colour your hair turns when exposed to a lot of sun (when it gets damaged). But you want something with a bit more life to it. Going too light looks so phony, and if they are the wrong tone you don't have in your hair, it all looks so very wrong.
